Rob Lange also had influences in this song, suggesting Bellamy includes the large Tom Morello styled solo and also suggested keeping the heavy outro to the song. With Bellamy stating that Rage Against the Machine is in his top two favourite bands, the links to Muse and Rage Against the Machine can be quite clear and defined. The riff right before the chorus is very similar to the intro of Bombtrack by Rage Against the Machine and the outro is also very similar to the outro from Freedom also by Rage Against the Machine.

The guitar tapping intro from Reapers screams Eddie Van Halen’s – Eruption as it sounds very similar to that exact song. When the chorus hits, the long heavy chords sound similar to that Absolution’s Stockholm Syndrome. The song Mercy has been sometimes labelled “Starlight II” by fans over the web, and, with sparkly octave notes being played on the piano, it’s not hard to see why. Rob Lange had suggested the band “Jam this song out” as originally it was a short two minute song, but after the influences of their producer it turned into the five minute song that it is now.Īn evolution of the riff can be seen in the video below: The harsh whispering of “I wanna make you, I wanna break you” is a very similar feature in The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson. This wouldn’t be the first time Depeche Mode have inspired Muse. The song itself sounds incredibly similar to Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode, having almost the exact same drum groove along with guitar riff.

The main riff of the song was first played during a gig at MCM Paris in 1999 and was a common “jamming riff” after Stockholm Syndrome in many live performances over the years, so it was interesting to see it developed into a full song. It also makes sense as Muse have covered that exact song a few times in the past during live performances. With the matching tempo, tuning and key as Prince’s Sign O’ the Times it would be safe to say this was an influence.

The opening track Dead Inside is about losing faith and the idea of hope. The album is Muse’s first full concept album, a story about the “rise and fall of a dictator” along with being influenced by many real life events, such as the empathy gap (being able to kill enemies through AI and not feeling responsible), WWIII and the East/West conflict. Although Muse returned to rock, they still display great influence from historic composers along with developing many of developing many of their old ideas into fully fledged songs, under the influence of Rob “Mutt” Lange (producer of AC/DC).
